Introduction

Ok my fellow Ecuadorians, you have been studying English all your school life, from nursery school to elementary school and all the way through high school. You are now at the university level and you continue learning English.

Only now, you know how important it is to be competitive in the working world and you need to show your employer how good your English is to get that job or that promotion you have been looking for.

On the other hand, you may be like other students who are looking to continue their studies and you want to do it abroad, in the United States, Canada, England, or Australia, for example. Why not? Everyone else is doing it. You can too!

Since you have been studying English all your life, I assume you have a good general knowledge of English and that you can communicate at an acceptable level.

As a matter of fact, I know you can! You may not think so, but if I had the opportunity to interview you, you would probably be surprised about how well you can defend yourself in English.

In the last ten to fifteen years, I have seen how many schools, from nursery schools to high schools, have really made it a priority to offer English in their study programs in order to be competitive. Of course! You can’t be an educational institution now and NOT offer English as part of the curriculum.

It’s because of this that I can say that you probably have a general knowledge of the language at this point. I’m only assuming, of course, but if you attended a bilingual school, and all schools in Ecuador are bilingual now, you probably do!

Based on this logical assumption, if you are one of these students, who need to show their English proficiency to their employer, or who want to continue their studies abroad, the TOEFL® iBT exam can help you meet your goals. Because you are Ecuadorian, if you want to go and study abroad, more English speaking universities require you to take the TOEFL® iBT exam than any other exam to show them that you will not have difficulties communicating in English when you get there.

You may not think so, but if I had the opportunity to interview you, you would probably be surprised about how well you can defend yourself in English.

This is what it’s all about!

The TOEFL® iBT exam was created to measure your ability to do this. By showing that you are proficient in English, you can go anywhere you want to go and do anything you want to do.

First of all, I want you to understand what it means to be proficient. Proficiency means having a good standard ability or skill to do something. With this in mind, when we talk about showing how proficient you are in English, it doesn’t mean that you have to speak English perfectly to make a good grade on the exam, or that you have to write perfectly when you write in English. No!

Have you ever met an American from the U.S. who speaks perfect Spanish? No, right! To speak perfect Spanish, an American would practically have to live in a Spanish speaking country all his life. In turn, to speak perfect English, you would have to grow up in an English speaking country and speak it all the time in order to make it YOUR language, too.

When this is not the case, you have to feel comfortable with the English you have and make the best use of it. As long as you can communicate your ideas in a coherent and understandable way, both in speaking and in writing, you will be fine!

Now then, with these logical concepts in mind, I want to talk to you about how to approach an Exam!

The TOEFL® iBT exam.

Even if you know English, it is not enough to say that you are ready to take the exam. You must have strategies as to how to confront the exam.

Strategies and confidence! These are the two factors that I consider you need in order to be a successful test taker.

Time in the exam is your enemy. But if we know the strategies as to how to beat our enemy, there will be no problem on how to do this.

In the TOEFL® iBT exam, you will encounter different components and you should know how to approach each part confidently in order to make a good grade and to do it in the amount of time that you are allowed for each section.
